Dwarf Fortress suppressed a million sales on Steam, according to the announcement on social media from the game’s publisher, Kitfox Games.
As of the time of writing, the construction and management simulation and roguelike indie video game features an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam with 26,286 user reviews.
On the first day alone, Steam users purchased Dwarf Fortress 160,000 times, far exceeding Kitfox Games’ expectations. Within six days, sales of the game reached 300,000 copies. By February 2023, they exceeded 600,000 copies, and by April 2024, 800,000 copies.
Dwarf Fortress was created by brothers Zach and Tarn Adams under the name of Bay 12 Games development studio. They began developing the game in the early 2000s and released its first free version in 2006. That classic version of Dwarf Fortress is still available for download from the project’s official website. A paid edition with graphical tiles and a new soundtrack was published by Kitfox Games and released to Steam and Itch.io in 2022.
The news is coming on the heels of the recent release of four documentary series about Dwarf Fortress by Noclip, a venture that makes crowdfunded video game documentaries.
